Volvo is ready for Euro 6. Here’s D13K460.

Euro 6 is approaching. It’s the most stringent European emission standard to date. D13K460 is our first engine to fulfil the demands. Without compromises. Here are the facts. I-Torque. Our new driveline for Euro 6.
Well before Euro 6 becomes mandatory, our new driveline is launched. We call it I-Torque. Among the highlights are a new generation of I-Shift and a fuel performance you thought impossible. Learn more about I-Torque.
What is Euro 6?
Compared with the previous standard, Euro 6 mainly targets two types of emissions: nitrogen oxides (NOX) and particulate matter (PM).

The limits are extremely strict:

NOX is reduced by 80% – to 0.40 g/kWh (steady-state cycle)
NOX is reduced by 77% – to 0,46 g/kWh (transient cycle)
PM is reduced by 50% – to 0.01 g/kWh
The latter is actually even tougher, since not only the weight, but also the number of particulates count. To fulfil this demand, a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is needed, to capture even the smallest of particulates.

Euro 6 becomes mandatory for all new heavy trucks from 1 January, 2014. But it may be a good option to invest in the new technology sooner than this.

Why invest in Euro 6 before 2014?
Being among the first to invest in a Euro 6-certified truck has its benefits. First of all, you can be sure to enjoy any incentives available on your market.

But you might also gain an edge on the competition. More and more customers let environmental factors be a deciding factor when choosing a supplier.

D13K460 – many news but few differences
Except for it being considerably cleaner, you won’t notice many differences between D13K460 and its Euro 5 sibling.

Power and torque curves are similar, providing excellent driveability. And the fuel consumption is almost on par.

Furthermore, the particulate filter regenerates itself under normal driving conditions, and is changed at regular service intervals.

Our solution for Euro 6

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) was our choice for Euro 4 and Euro 5. We’ve now refined this technology further to comply with Euro 6 without compromising engine performance.

To keep the NOX levels down, we’ve added an un-cooled EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system to the engine. It makes sure the driveability is maintained, while optimising exhaust-gas temperature and NOX levels for efficient after-treatment.

In addition to the SCR catalyst, the after-treatment system has been equipped with a DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst), a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and an Ammonia Slip Catalyst (ASC) – all contained within the same muffler.
